The god-given talent of Ricardo Campbell, aka Richie Kupone, aka K.U.P., left such an impression on a music guru’s mind that an entire empire was built to perfect the undeniable magnitude and dynamic of his art. The 25-year old born and bred Jamaican, moved to Los Angeles just before the break of the new millennium, in 1999. The young Jamaican found he was alone in a very different city. Accustomed to a hard hustle, Kupone took what street smarts he learned from growing up in the urban ghettos of eastern Jamaica (Tivoli Gardens, Jungle, Water House & Duhaney Park), to keep his focus and determination. Proudly and in his favor his nationality bears true to its motto “Out of Many, One People”; a true musician at heart he quickly established himself in the underground reggae-dancehall community.
The lyricist quickly took a liking to the genres of rap and hip-hop. The humble rising star cites admiration for musical icons such as Biggie Smalls, Common, 50 Cent, Jill Scott, Jay-Z and Gangstarr. Urban music has evolved Kupone’s musical range to create the mosaic of a hip-hop dancehall melody, which is nothing less than groundbreaking.
But the dominance of dancehall and reggae in Richie’s music is organic. He will be the first to tell you that he would not have developed his passion for music
so intently and devotedly without the trailblazing works of Legendary Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley), Super Cat, Shabba Ranks, Garnett Silk, John Holt, Buju Banton and Rodney Price. He declares respect and admiration for young veterans in dancehall such as Assassin, Busy Signal, Munga, Vybez Kartel, Elephant Man and Movado.
Kupone’s album set to launch spring 2008, has been perfected by the hands of legendary Reggae Producer Fabian Cooke, The Scientist & David Ku.
